Description
Don't want Time Machine to fill up your whole Drobo? This application for OS X based upon an Automator action provides a simple way when you're setting up Time Machine to force it to only use up 2x the size of your internal hard drive for backup on your external hard drive. Please note, as with all DroboApps, this is unsupported by either Apple or Data Robotics so please use at your own risk.

Note on using Time Tamer with OS X 10.5.6

There is a bug in Time Machine's user interface when using it to backup to a sparsebundle. Using Time Machine's "Enter Time Machine" option to see your backups, you may see only "now" on the time line. This is visual display bug, Time Machine does make backups.

You can manually explore the backups made by Time Machine. In Finder select the sparesbundle file that Time Machine uses. Then from the Finder menu select "Open" (keyboard short cut is command + O keys). Your Mac will mount and open the sparsebundle - you will see a disk icon on your desktop. Select and open it. Inside you will see a folder named Backups.backupdb. Open that. Inside you will see a folder whose name is the same as your Mac. Open that. Inside you will see a set of folders, each representing a point in time when Time Machine made a backup.

These are named like this: 2009-02-01-220314. The name is a time stamp consisting of the year, month, day, and time that the backup was made. In this example:

year: 2009
month: 2 (February)
day: 1
time: 220314 (22:13:04)

On some of the knowedge base articles at http://www.apple.com/support/ indicate the inability to see the backups is due to either characters used in naming your Mac, or the length of your Mac's name.
